Experience the magic of the ‘auld country’, with this 7-day tour of the rural counties of Ireland West. Visit Connemara, Galway, Limerick, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Marian Shrine at Knock and magical Killarney.
Day 1: Landing at Ireland West Airport in Knock, you’re perfectly placed for exploring the rural countryside of the Emerald Isle. You’ll spend your first day in the idyllic rural setting of Connemara, a place that famously typifies the auld country. Soak up the atmosphere, amid the scenery of the Maumturk Mountains and the Twelve Bens, before heading to another area of natural beauty; The Burren.
Day 2: One of Ireland’s most captivating landscapes, the Burren is an area of craggy rocks, limestone plateaus, karsts, clints and grykes, populated by sparse little villages and in spring time comes to life with a colourful array of flora. The Burren is also where you’ll find one of Ireland’s famous picture postcard scenes – the Cliffs of Moher, where the land cuts into vertical cliffs, overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Day 3: From the Burren, you’ll head to County Kerry and our myguideIreland travel tip is to take the ferry across the River Shannon, from Killimer to Tarbert – it’s a unique experience and will save 30 miles of driving and fuel costs. From Tarbert continue to the town of Tralee where you’ll be based for the next two nights.
Day 4: From Tralee you can take a day trip around the rustic Dingle Peninsula or take a trip out to one of Ireland’s favorite destinations; Killarney. The Killarney National Park is famous throughout the world, with its delightful lakeland and mountain scenery. Take an entertaining tour in a horse drawn carriage or visit the Muckross Estate to see how it’s inhabitants lived in the 19th century. The Dingle Peninsula presents an off the beaten track alternative, a place of old Irish traditions and the setting for the film Ryan’s Daughter. In Dingle Bay you’ll find one of the west of Ireland’s most famous residents Fungi the dolphin, who regularly entertains visitors.
Day 5: After you’ve sampled the excellent hospitality of County Kerry, you’ll spend the next two nights in Galway. Enroute why not take some time out in Limerick City, the famous backdrop for Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes. The city has changed much for the better since the grim times McCourt describes, but some of the places remain and the city is full of historic sights from King John’s Castle to the Hunt Museum, home to an amazing collection of rare artifacts. Later arrive in Galway in time to take a tour of this historic walled city, amble around its stylish boutiques and sample it’s lively nightlife and traditional Irish music.
Day 6: Spend the day catching up on anything you may have missed in Galway City. Visit Nora Barnacle’s House, once home to the wife of James Joyce, the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas of Myra (or Santa Claus as he is otherwise known) or Galway’s fabulous Cathedral. Alternatively take a boat trip out to the Aran Islands for an authentic Irish experience, where the old rural way of life and the Irish language are alive and well.
Day 7: On the final day of your vacation experience the miracle of Knock, where in 1879 Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared before the villagers. You’ll have time to visit the world renowned Basilica and Marian Shrine at Knock, before catching your return flight home with cherished memories of your magical tour of Ireland West.
